3:05 pm - dentist trip
Thursday Toby had his first dentist appointment. He did GREAT! He sat still the whole time while the hygienist (whose name was the same as our kitty's) got the "bugs" out of his teeth. The dentist is strictly a pediatric dentist, and had a TV with Seasame Street going and stickers and she was great.
Unfortunately, he does have 2 cavities on the top and some enamel degradation on the bottom. We're going to check back in 3 months but will need them taken care of - probably under anesthesia. I am terrified of him being put under...but don't really know if there's any way around it. They don't want him to move and get cut with the drill.....
So, we will now start fluoride treatments, because in my opinion, it's needed.

12:29 pm - Night Weaning, continued
Last night was the third night of trying to night wean, and the least successful. Toby woke up about every hour, and then from 3:00AM on it seemed like once I got him down he stayed asleep for 10 minutes. So, at 4:00 I declared it "morning" and he nursed to sleep.
And today I am dragging.

3:22 pm - Night Weaning
Last night was the first night I refused to nurse Toby after he fell asleep, until it was light out. I'd been trying to do this since Saturday, but because he puts up such a fight, I always gave up, as I was always so tired. Last night was different because I unintentionally passed out at 8:30 after getting him to sleep, so when he woke up at 3:00AM (which is longer than normal, anyways) I had more energy to use alternate coping skills ;) I fought me for an hour - he's almost be asleep, and then cry for "muh." (he can say "muh" and "ck" sounds, but he won't put them together!)
So, I kind of feel like a new person with energy!

Last night, James heard Toby say "ball" in his sleep and make the sign for ball as well.
Toby was dreaming!

5:21 pm - Overtired
BabyCenter says:
Kids often hit an overtired wall at around 18 months (when two naps are too many and one isn't enough) and again at 2 1/2 (when one nap is too many, but no nap is asking for trouble). If he's hitting this wall, there's not a lot you'll be able to do. Consider this another notch in your parental belt of "stages."

I now understand why some species eat their young...

Toby used his first "two-sign" request today he signed "more drink"!
Okay, so it was for milk out of a shot glass, but it kept him (and me!) happy!

5:43 pm - sign language
Toby's really taking off with his knowledge of sign language.
He knows eat, walk, milk, bird, cat, dog, all done, airplane, car, hat, and more. He may have also signed "cheese" today, but I'm not sure until I see it again.
He's learning so much so fast.

11:51 am - baby signs and escapes
Toby signed "more" yesterday - so he ate about a third of a block of cheese because I wanted to encourage it!

Mr. Toby was an escape artist and got out of the fenced in playground and into the parking lot. I think my heart stopped for a second. I was trying to not hover over him and give him some room to roam, and that's what he does!!!!!!

4:18 pm - My patience tank has long been emptied
Okay, I said I wasn't going to do any more of these, but this just hit home: why didn't I ever hear about this?!? I heard about the terrible two's. But at 9 months they go through an attitude problem. And now 13 months old, too? And to the lady at the restaurant who said "I love that age - when they were easy" do you know how sad you made me? This gets harder?
Toby has been so impossible lately - he whines the whole time when he's home. We're trying to determine whether he's bored, as he's good outside and when we're out different places. Just at home the only thing that helps is going outside or watching Signing Times. And I really don't want him watching TV all day long....
Toby hits a little..and throws things. He doesn't bite to be mean, but to experiment very infrequently. But what a temper - just like his mom...

Your 13-month-old: Week 4

Spirited and mild-mannered toddlers alike will experiment with ... how shall we say it? ... undesirable behavior. If your toddler indulges in fits of screaming, hitting, and biting, you can take some solace in knowing that his development is right on track. Discipline can be a challenge with kids this age, so try to build a little personal time into your schedule each week as a way to refuel your patience tank.

7:51 pm - Baby Signs
So, Toby's been slowly adding signs to his vocabulary.
He signs "dog" for our neighborhood dog, and has made up his own for "all done" as well as "car." Well, "all done" and "car" are actually the same sign, a big sweeping motion, but I know what he means. I guess he just doesn't have the fine motor skill down!
Still no other words than "ba-la" for balloon, though, and we're at 13 months. I'm not concerned, he knows what he's talking about!

9:32 pm - Odds and Ends
Toby blows kisses now, it's so cute. It's actually more of a click made with his tongue, but he thinks it's kisses!
He'll also clap his hands when you ask him too.
If you let him have the container of Cheerios, he sometimes takes a handful and sticks the whole thing, hand and all, in his mouth! It looks like I'm starving him!
He loves going with Daddy for his nightly walk around the neighborhood, and petting the dog down the road. He loves animals!
We've also been taking him in the shower rather than giving him a bath, and there's a lot less fuss! Of course, we have to shower too but we were having to get into the bath, so nothing really lost there except for the screaming!
He is RUNNING everywhere - no time for walking! He'll take the big pilates ball and roll it all throughout the house - and silently too, so if you turn around you may be in for a surprise!
He loves "nesting" things - cups in boxes, spoons in bowls, toys in boxes, etc. James brought home a little cooler and we find all types of weird stuff in it. And he loves my cell phone - he'll be walking around with it and I will call it from our home phone and he thinks it's funny how it vibrates and plays a song.

7:48 am - Progress
Good stuff. Toby had mac n' cheese yesterday and loved it. He is a cheese machine! He loves little cubes of cheddar or monterey jack, too.
The other night he used sign language for "milk" to say he wanted to be nursed more before going to sleep. Yay! We've been really bad at reinforcing sign language so it's nice to see he's learned something! Now if he only knew (or heeded) no!
He's also said his first word - "ba," ba-la," or "ba-ba" which means balloon. I really thought "cat" would be first as he looooves the cats (the feeling is not mutual!) But he is obsessed with balloons.

10:27 pm - Happy Birthday Toby!
Today Toby turns one.
My little guy continues to amaze me with new things he's learned. He gives hugs now which are the best. He has such a cute personality and I love spending time with him.
It's been a lot of work, and it's not over yet, but I love this guy more than I ever thought possible, and I'm ready for the next year!

4:21 pm - Your 12-month-old's development: Week 1
I'm stopping posting these at the one-year mark. I've never been a huge fan of them because all babies develop differently, and I can't keep up with them anyway!

Your 12-month-old's development: Week 1

Taking his first steps

That major rite of passage is almost here, if it hasn't happened already — some time this month, your baby may take his first steps alone. (If he doesn't, don't worry — it takes some children several more weeks or months to start toddling.) If he's like most children, your little one will take those early strides on tiptoe with his feet turned outward. Keep the camera ready to capture the moment!

New kinds of play

Your baby's play probably will start shifting from mastering his fine motor skills — he's got that thumb-and-forefinger grasp down pat — to exercising larger muscles. Some children this age have an attention span of two to five minutes for quiet activities, although your child's favorite games may not be all that quiet.

Your child probably thinks it's fun to push, throw, and knock everything down. He'll give you a toy as well as take one, and he likes games where he can put things in containers and dump them out again. This works well with blocks in buckets or boxes and with pots and pans, which he can nest inside one another. He'll thrill to the loud sounds of those pots and pans banging together, too.
